His work led to the establishment of a field station in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to learn more about the global aspects of the AIDS epidemic.

De Cock, director of the Kenya office of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides a bit of personal background and then describes his role in CDC's 2014-16 Ebola epidemic response. In 2014 and 2015, Dr. De Cock rotated in and out as CDC's lead in Liberia and spent some time consulting with CDC's team in Sierra Leone. Lisa Delaney of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discusses her work supporting the safety and security of CDC deployers to West Africa and healthcare workers in the United States. From July of 2014 to the end of CDC's Ebola response, Delaney served as Worker Safety and Health Team Lead at the Emergency Operations Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She also deployed to Sierra Leone as a safety officer between April and May 2015.

<p>In 1942, when the U.S. was mobilizing for the Second World War, the U. S. Public Health Service set up a program to protect the personnel of military bases in the Southeastern states from malaria. This disease had long been rampant in the area, and posed serious threats to the health of the military and civilian populations. The program known as Malaria Control in War Areas (MCWA) was created to carry out the work. The lack of space in Washington due to the war effort allowed the program to base its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and closer to the work at hand. During the war years, the program was expanded to include the control of other communicable diseases. Because its work was so successful, a new organization was created around the nucleus of MCWA, the Communicable Disease Center (CDC). The date was July 1, 1946. This archive chronicles the agency’s early history from 1941-1951, including the contributions of local businessmen and Emory University. Dr. Rodel Desamu-Thorpe, epidemiologist with the Division of State and Local Readiness at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, briefly reviews his career, then details his work in response to the 2014-16 Ebola epidemic. As a health official in St. Louis, Dr. Desamu-Thorpe monitored travelers from West Africa. He continued this work from the federal level after coming to CDC in June 2015, then served as a project coordinator epidemiologist for the Men's Health Screening Program, an effort to test Ebola survivors in Liberia for viral persistence in their semen.
